This is a tutorial to configure your Linux-based dedicated Valheim server, featuring a system service which can upgrade/start up your server, and reports its status to your OS. Updating the Valheim server software is a fairly straight forward process, and mostly involves using a steamcmd tool we have setup previously in this project. The steamcmd software is what we will be using to load the latest release of the Valheim server software onto the Raspberry Pi. The SteamCMD software will need us to install box86 and a dedicated Valheim server will require us to use box64. To load Valheim server software onto a Raspberry Pi, we will need to use Steams command-line tool called steamcmd.

Now that we have installed and configured the Valheim server software on the Raspberry Pi, we can launch it using one command. If you are using our service, you can now run it again by running the command below. This means that we can now create a quick little script that stops Ubuntu Server 20.04 and restarts the system, which can be executed through a cronjob. Once you see the install valheim serversas vhserver, this is when LinuxGSM has finished installing the install script.

Now, for something interesting, we have to copy server_start.sh to Valheims directory, so when steamcmd updates the server at some point, your changes are not overwritten, and your services still run. Now it is tempting to simply execute the file called start_server.sh and boot up your game, but this comes with a downside. This is going to depend a lot on how techy you are; you might set up a system service, or you might be using screens to start a Valheim server in the background. If you are running this server on a shared-use VPS or a dedicated server, then there is no network changes that need to be made, however, if you are running it on a desktop, then port forwarding needs to be researched for your router.

You will need to forward the relevant ports to your server, this is beyond the scope of this tutorial, and when logging in to your game you should be able to locate your server on your server browser listing and connect to it. Depending on where you are hosting your Valheim server, we will have to do a few different things to make sure that our players are able to connect to Valheim, as well as maintaining a good firewall to keep things that we do not want exposed to the Internet closed. To perform the installation, connect to your server via SSH (Linux) or Putty (Windows), login as an user with root privileges, and execute the following commands. The first thing you will need is a Linux machine, it can be either a Virtual Private Server or a dedicated server, as long as it is running a Linux distribution.

LinuxGSM (short for Linux Game Server Management) is an open-source game server builder and manager, running on Linux (of course). AMP is a popular game server administration panel that you can run on your PC/server, supports Valheim, and makes it easy to run Valheim from its web UI. In this article, we are going to walk you through the process of setting up a fully- fledged dedicated Valheim server using LinuxGSM in a few minutes. I am not very knowledgeable on what resources are required to run Everthing smoothly, but I ran the server in a pretty modest 2 core/8GB Linux VM (standard D2as_v4 in Azure) which could easily handle 4 players games.
